Icy Roads Making it Tough to Balance Budget in Tahlequah

The slightest threat of ice on roads is enough to put part of Tahlequah’s budget underwater.

“We’ll have to make do,” said street commissioner, Mike Corn.

The city is strapped for cash. $18,000 is all that's available to treat roads and it’s almost gone. Its cold news to bear in the middle of the winter, especially since crews are working with limited equipment.

“And all we got is three sand trucks,” said Corn.

With limited amounts of salt and sand to spare, corn says citizens can't expect more money to be pumped into the budget until July--months after the threat of snow and freezing weather has passed.

However, there is another option: it would provide more money to prevent slick streets, but it would also take from the budget set aside to fix potholes. Meantime, crews are working around the clock to prevent slick spots.

“I work half of them 12 hours and then the other half 12 hours,” said Corn.
